Mostly, Tom likes to work on his own painting. As a longtime faculty member of the American Academy of Art. Tom taught Watercolor Painting, and various Illustration courses including Beginning Illustration, Life Drawing for Illustrators, Storyboarding, and Concept Art. Besides being a fulltime instructor, for 10 0f those years he also worked in the capacity of a Department Chair where his duties included: Composing the learning objectives for both the Fine Art and Illustration programs (all courses). Creating program maps for both depts. Developing the content for a number of new classes in both the Fine Art and Illustration depts. Working to modernize both departments by combining the school’s traditional focus with contemporary approaches to art making and illustration. Providing faculty advisement on writing content for syllabi. He was a member of the faculty committee focused on developing an assessment program to measure student learning. Heavily involved with preparing the successful submission for regional accreditation with the HLC (Higher Learning Commission) beginning in 2006. A member of the school’s HLC Assessment Academy team 2009 - 2015. As an illustrator Tom has completed almost 2000 illustration projects for a variety of books, magazines, newspapers and other institutions.His work has been seen in many national and international art exhibitions and won numerous awards. He is listed in Who’s Who and Who’s Who in American Art and has been a frequent lecturer on art and illustration at schools of all levels. He has also contributed to a number of art magazines. As an active member of the Air Force Art Program, he serves on the governing board of the Midwest Air Force Artists, and has work in the permanent collection of the Pentagon. He is also a Signature member of the American Watercolor Society, and the Illinois Watercolor Society. Mr. Herzberg holds an M.F.A. in Printmaking from Northern Illinois University, a B.A. in Art (Printmaking) from Northeastern Illinois University and also studied Printmaking at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
